What to Expect with a Panel Upgrade

What is a Panel Upgrade? An Electrical Panel Upgrade is a service where the existing electrical service panel is upgraded to a new one with new circuit breakers.

Electrical Panel Upgrade Overview

  • Power will be off for approximately 8 hours.
  • Area around electrical panel is typically left unstuccoed until after final inspection. After city approval, we will return to stucco and paint.
  • In the event the utility company requests a new location, additional costs may be required.

Preparation for a Panel Upgrade

  • We will obtain any necessary permits.
  • Your dedicated account manager will notify you to apply for change to existing service with the utility company by having them come out to spot and unlock the electrical meter.

Day of the Panel Upgrade

This process takes the better part of one day.
  • A typical electrical panel replacement will take roughly 6-8 hours and start around 7-8am.
  • Electrician will start the power down process for the home.
  • The ground system is installed as required.
  • Electrician removes the old panel and installs the new panel
  • Newly installed panel is properly sealed with black asphalt paper to prevent moisture.
  • The circuit wiring is reinstalled.

After the Panel Upgrade

  • Building department official performs an inspection, and tags the panel as approved and ready for power.
  • Electric utility company is notified or returns as scheduled to energize the new panel or make the electric panel hookup.

When a Panel Relocation is Required

The new electrical panel is not installed in the same location as the original service. A new electrical panel will be installed where the utility company requires the new utility meter connection. The existing panel and breakers will remain. Grounding for the new panel will match the Authority Having Jurisdiction's (AHJ) guidelines.

  • Additional Cost if the distance of the new location exceeds 20 feet.
  • Additional Cost if requested to remove existing panel or convert it to a new subpanel.
